ELBRIDGE, N.Y. – Jeremy Quick made history Saturday night as he became the first ever Capital Region Sprint Car Agency driver to win an event at the Rolling Wheels Raceway. In winning he earned the 2008 series long point title as well.
“I couldn’t wait to come here,” said Quick. “I like the bigger tracks because of the speed. I really liked the place it is big and fast. I can’t wait to come back here in the future.”
Quick came into the evening nine points behind Jeff VanSteenburg in the chase for the championship. With VanSteenburg’s night ending early in a wild rollover just after the midway point, Quick earned the championship with the win in the Racesaver 20.
“We’ve had an up and down year,” commented Quick. “We had a couple of 22nd place finishes but other than that we’ve had mostly really good finishes. We came into Accord (Speedway) last week with the point lead and lost it because we point raced.
“I came in today nine points behind and I told my dad I’d rather be in second because I can go all out. I told him that I can go for the win and not worry about anything else.”
The race got off to a rocky start with a hard crash at the initial green. Craig Rochelle and Scott Davis both got upside down with Chad King and Curtis Bradshaw also involved. All drivers were uninjured in the accident.
The second attempt to get the race going saw another hard crash as Chuck Alessi broke the front end of his No.19 and collected John Matrafailo and Kory Gurney.
The third attempt at a green went off without a hitch as Quick grabbed the advantage from his pole starting position. The 29-year-old pilot of Accord, N.Y., beat Jim McCaffrey into turn one on the bottom of the speedway to take the lead.
Quick was the leader on lap 11 when the red flagged stopped the race again when VanSteenburg and Marshall Gogg made contact. VanSteenburg hit the outside retaining wall at the exit of turn four and rolled numerous times down the front straightaway. He was uninjured in the crash and Quick was forced to endure another restart.
“We were running a lower gear so we could build the momentum up,” said Quick. “It took me two laps to get the car going. I just tried to hold the bottom on the restarts so no one could get by me.”
In the closing laps of the race, Quick held off the challenges of Washingtonville, N.Y., driver, Anthony Brennan. Although he had some problems with his JPM powered Maxim prior to the checkered flag.
“We went with a softer tire than everybody else and I was worried I’d used it up,” commented Quick. “I found out after the race that my left rear tire was slowly going flat. I didn’t realize it until I came into the pits and the tire went completely soft.”
Quick earned his second win of the season with Anthony Brennan crossing the line in the runner-up position. Danny Ody, of Albany, N.Y., finished in third with his No.77.
Warren Alexson, of Altamont, N.Y., advanced two spots to finish fourth with Matt Demitraszek moving from eighth to complete the top five.
Pit Notes: 27-cars entered the event….Three eight lap heat races were held with Billy VanInwegen Jr., Alexson and Rochelle grabbing wins….Four drivers flipped their rides including Rochelle, Davis, Bruno Leombruno and VanSteenburg. They were all uninjured….Daren Bolac made the tow from Virginia and earned the hard charger by advancing 16 positions….The CRSA banquet is the next scheduled event on November 8 at the Elk’s Lodge in Amsterdam, N.Y.
