FONDA, N.Y. – Dylan Swiernik’s season didn’t start well at Fonda Speedway as he had some tough luck in practice on opening day. On Saturday night he got the 2009 racing season off to a good start as he captured the first ever event for the Capital Region Sprint Agency at the Fonda Speedway . The driver, of Port Leyden, N.Y., led all 25-laps of the make-up feature event to earn his second career victory.
“This means a lot to me,” said Swiernik. “We came down here and practiced a few weeks ago and drove into the wall. We fixed her up and came back last week before the rains came and ran the fastest lap. This week we came back with the same setup and got it done.”
Action got underway with Swiernik and Matt Demitraszek leading the field to the green. Last week Demitraszek got the jump on him at the green but this time Swiernik took full advantage of the pole starting position and bolted in front of the field.
“I made sure of that this time,” commented Swiernik. “We got a good start this time and we’re able to pull away from there.”
By lap 10, Swiernik encountered slower traffic at the tail of the field. This forced him to change his approach and move his No. 7c to different grooves on the speedway. He was slowed up slightly allowing Dan Hennesy to close in.
“The traffic wasn’t too bad,” stated Swienik. “I needed to make sure that I got to the outside. Once I did that I could get by them with ease.”
Swiernik was the leader as the race went under caution on lap 14 for Warren Alexson. Alexson broke on the front straightaway and came to a stop in turn two.
On the restart, Swiernik was able to hold off the challenges of Hennessey and Jeff VanSteenburg. He again pulled away from the competition
Hennessey and VanSteenburg had one final chance to get challenge for the lead when the field slowed on lap 20 for Bruce Evans. Evans came to a stop in turn two with smoke billowing from under the hood of his ride.
“The cautions actually helped me out,” said Swiernik. “They helped the car and it gave me a chance to catch my breath.”
Swiernik was nearly perfect on the restart and he was able get away from the rest of the field to win the opening event for the CRSA series.
Hennessy, of Washingtonville, N.Y., settled for second after starting the event from the fifth starting position. VanSteenburg, of West Shokan, N.Y., crossed the line in third after moving foward from the ninth starting spot.
Billy Jaycox, of Middleburg, N.Y., ran a solid race to finish fourth with Tyler Rice rounding out the top five.
The next event for the winged wonders of the CRSA will occur this coming Saturday (5/9) night at the Utica-Rome Speedway as part of the Victoria 200 Weekend. For more information regarding the Capital Region Sprint Agency be sure to check out their website at www.crsasprintcars.com.
