VERNON, N.Y. – Jeremy Quick is the defending Capital Region Sprint Agency Inc. champion. On Saturday night, Quick, of Kerhonkson, N.Y., took a step toward earning the 2009 title as he survived a late race scare to earn his first win of the season at the Utica-Rome Speedway.
“Feels good to finally get that first win of the season,” stated Quick. “Last week we had to miss Fonda (Speedway) because I had a vacation planned. The first race rained out on me and I missed the makeup. This is a good way to come back and I’ll tell you I’m ready for next week now.”
The field was brought to the green flag with Mason Olmstead and Dan Hennessy on the front row. Olmstead jumped out in front of the field with Hennessy falling inline behind him.
Olmstead remained the leader on lap five as action began to pick up behind him for the second position. Phil Peworchik battled with Hennessy as Quick, who started fifth, closed in.
Those three continued their battle with Quick securing the runner-up spot on lap 13. Once in second, he quickly closed in on the leader Olmstead.
By lap 15, Quick caught Olmstead and began challenging him for the lead. One lap later he moved up the speedway to the middle groove and secured the race lead in turns three and four.
“I actually moved up and found more bite up there,” said Quick. “The car really hooked up out there on the top. It was a good thing I moved out there because I think it made me a little bit quicker.”
Upon taking the race lead, Quick was able to open up a two second lead advantage over Olmstead.
Quick got one final scare on the final lap of the feature as he was going to put a lap on Dylan Swiernik. As he moved to the outside to pass him in turn four, Swiernik did a 360 spin right in front of Quick nearly collecting him.
“I can’t say what went through my mind,” laughed Quick. “There is no doubt about it that was a scary moment.”
With Quick earning the win, Olmstead, a CRSA rookie, finished in the second spot in the feature event. It was the best run to date for the Sauquoit, N.Y., driver.
“I’m really happy with the run tonight,” commented Olmstead. “We had a little bit of trouble with the motor but hopefully we’ll get it figured out this week.”
Jeff VanSteenburg, of West Shokan, N.Y., came from the 17th starting position to finish in third earning him the MAGSARUS Hard Charger award.
Peworchik from Binghamton, N.Y., crossed the line in fourth while Matt Demitraszek, of Fort Johnson, N.Y., completed the top five.
The next event for the winged wonders of the CRSA will occur next Sunday night (5/17) at the Five Mile Point Speedway. For more information regarding the Capital Region Sprint Agency be sure to check out their website at www.crsasprintcars.com.
