Accord, NY - With plenty of interest surrounding the Friday opening event of the King of the Catskills weekend, the second day of the big weekend of racing will be jam-packed with racing talent and the loyal racing fans will have the opportunity to witness the CRSA Sprint Cars working their magic on the Accord high banks as they too are engaged in a heated point's battle within their group. Leading the parade of CRSA Stars into the Saturday event will be defending series champion Jeremy Quick who brings a narrow five point lead into the event over the hard riding Matt Tanner. Quick, who cut his teeth in racing at Accord and resides in nearby Kerhonkson, will be a fan favorite when the series comes to town as will Berlin, New York's Matt Tanner, who put on a great show the last time in at Accord on June12th and captured the victory and sits just five points behind Quick in the battle for the series championship. Equally as popular is the veteran campaigner Jeff VanSteenburg from West Shokan, New York who has vast ties with the Accord racing community as his dad Stretch VanSteenburg was a former track champion at both Accord and the Lebanon Valley Speedways.
These three drivers and a host of other talented stars will converge on the Ulster County facility all looking to add to their racing laurels as their season is coming to the end. Jeremy Quick has 757 points to lead the parade. Matt Tanner has tallied up 752 points to date to reside in second place. Chad King, who is coming off a big win at Devil's Bowl on Labor Day, is third with 731 tallies. VanSteenburg is currently fourth with 690 points and John Matrafailo completes the top five with 687 markers. The series within a series has the D&D Auto Supply Southern New York Tour Championship on the line as well. With just the Accord event and the Eastern States weekend Sprint Car portion left to run Matt Tanner comes in leading the the way with 138 points. Matrafailo is second with 116 tallies and the veteran Warren Alexson is third with 104 points. Billy Jaycox Jr and Tyler Rice are tied for fourth with each having earned 102 points thus far. The Peak Racing Equipment Series has Quick as the leader with 456 points, Tanner in second with 420 tallies, Matrafailo in third with 401 points, Jaycox Jr with 395 and Chad King completing the top five with 382 markers.
Dylan Swiernik is a three time winner in 2009 having won the opener at Fonda in May, Devil's Bowl in July and winning out at the Woodhull Speedway in late August. Jermemy Quick has also landed in the winners circle twice capturing wins at Utica Rome and the Five Mile Point Speedway. Matt Tanner has scored two wins with his first being at Accord and the second win coming at Orange County. JR Hurlburt at Five Mile Point, John Matrafailo at Albany Saratoga, Mason Olmstead at Utica Rome, Billy Jaycox Jr at OCFS, and Chad King at Devil's Bowls have all been single event winners during the 2009 season.
The supporting cast of the CRSA has some great talent making up the series. Rookies John Cunningham, Phil Peworchik and Mason Olmstead have added depth to the veteran roster that includes former champion Chuck Alessi, Dan Hennessy, Bruce Evans, Josj Flach, Bruno and John Leonbruno, John Lodini, Peter Sindt, Craig Rochelle and traveling men Mike Stelter for upper New York State and hard driving Todd Spangler out of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania.
The Camper's Barn Sportsman will headline the WLR Construction Saturday portion of the show. The Sportsman cars have been impressive all season long on the Accord High banks and the with $1,000.00 on the line all of the Accord regulars and some expected invaders will make for a great show on Staurday. Brian Krummel defended his track title this year and in true form captured the crown n the final night of points over the equally as impressive Ryan Stortini. OCFS Sportsman champion, "The Razor" Mike Ruggiero is expected in as in his first year of competition at Accord he registered a third place in the final points. Kevin Ward, David Coene, Jesse Marks, Ken Ferrier, Greg McCloskey, Darrel Ford and many more are expected in for this Sportsman driver only spectacular event.
The Spec Sportsman will also be part of the racing activity on Saturday and the racing in this division is tight in competition but deep in talent as the division is a solid mix of veteran campaigners going against some of the brighest young racing stars in the ranks today. "The Mentor" Jeff Richardson has captured the title the past two years but the talented teenagers such as Anthony Perrego, Kyle Rohner, David and Kenny Hinsch, Tyler and Kenny Boniface, Danny Cross and Chris Stevens have been giving the veterans all they handle this season. Besides Richardson, the veterans include Scott Mathews, Mike Sabia, Phil Recchio Eric Moon and Frank Venezia.
The Pure Stock division makes up the final divison that will compete on Staurday. Newly crowned champion Tommy Johnson will headline the group that has Mike Deyo, Paul Aragon, Gary Ronk, Ray Tartantino, John Woinoski, Kyle Wright, Ryan and Phil Johnson and Joe Knoth among the many who will be looking to add their racing resume with a great run this weekend.
Accord Speedway Promoter Gary Palmer has been methodical in putting the finishes touches on his pristine quarter mile hot spot in preparation for the biggest event of the season at his Ulster County speedplant. The spectacular two day event has something special to offer for all racing fans for the unique eight division two day weekend event sponsored by Bill Rumsey and his WLR Construction Team.
The Friday portion will usher in the return of the ROC Dirt Modified Tour with all of the traveling ROC stars locking horns with the talented roster of Accord drivers who will defend the home turf in a 100-lap feature event that will have a 50-lap fuel stop and waiting at the end of the final checkered flag will be $6,000.00, the biggest paying event on the ROC Tour.
Current ROC Tour point leader Brett Hearn will lead the charge into the tough Accord race arena and he will have in tow last year's ROC champion Pat Ward, Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson, Stewart Friesen, Brian Weaver, Billy Van Pelt, Mike Colsten and a host of many talented ROC drivers seeking to take home a big slice of the Accord pie. Hearn has a slight seven point lead in the latest ROC point's update and with three events remaining on the ROC schedule, the ability to score big in the final events will dictate the champion for the 2009 series.
The Accord Speedway's 2009 Rhinebeck Ford Modified Champion Jerry Higbie will lead the parade of Accord drivers who will defend the home turf in the spectacular shootout and he will have a great militia beside him with 2008 Champion Andy Bachetti, Mike Ricci, Kevin Duryea, Bobby Trapper, Scott Ferrier and many more as the Accord regulars will work hard at keeping the big bucks on the line in-house. Late season additions to the speedway, Brian Malcolm and Russ Zimmerman from the defunct Redline Raceway, Rick Holsten and Sean Gunther from the Garden State, the reinstatement of Jamie Yannone back to the speedway, and the return of Robbie Green has added great depth to an already talented group of Accord regulars.
The phone lines at the speedway are at warp speed as more and more drivers have been alerting the Accord Speedway staff of thier intent to be a part of the weekend activities. From the Garden State, racing legend Billy Pauch Sr and his son Billy Jr have announced their intentions to be part of the weekend and from the Keystone State, Grandview track champion Jeff Strunk, and former Penn Can champion Mike Gular, Joey Grammes and Ricky Yetter have filed entries for the event.
