SCHOHARIE, N.Y. – The Capital Region Sprint Agency officially ended 2009 on Saturday night at the Holiday Inn Express in Schoharie, N.Y. with their annual season ending awards banquet.
Numerous drivers walked away with special awards with Matt Tanner taking the biggest honor of all as the 2009 series champion.
It was Tanner’s first ever CRSA title and it came after a stellar season that saw him capture two feature event victories and ten top finishes in 15 events. He picked up point fund money from Kelly Racing Fuels and ProFab Engineering.
“This is a pretty cool deal,” commented Tanner. “I picked up a Mini-Sprint championship in the past but this way is way better.”
Along with the overall series championship, Tanner won the 2009 D&D Auto Supply Southern New York Tour championship earning him an additional $250.
“I was just hoping to get a win this year,” said Tanner. “I never thought we were going to win the southern New York title let alone the overall tour title.”
Former series champion, Jeremy Quick, finished second in the season long points to Tanner by only six markers. John Matrafailo’s late season charge propelled him to third in the overall points.
Chad King, of Caroga Lake, N.Y., finished fourth in the points with Billy Jaycox Jr., of Middleburg, N.Y., completing the top five.
Six through ten in the points included Jeff VanSteenburg, Tyler Rice, Warren Alexson, the series win leader Dylan Swiernik and John Cunningham.
Cunningham, of Pompey, N.Y., claimed the series Rookie of the Year award after his strong performance in 2009. It earned him a $100 gift certificate to Magsarus Ignitions and 55 gallons of methanol courtesy of Kelly Racing Fuels.
Rice and King left Saturday night’s gathering sharing the 2009 Most Improved Driver Award. Both drivers scored top ten point finishes with King also claiming his first series win during the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in September.
Harry Hamilton earned the 2009 Dedicated Owner Award. Hamilton owns the number one car piloted by VanSteenburg. The team led the points early in the season until a series of unfortunate incidents dropped them to sixth in the overall standings.
Matrafailo, of Milford, Pa., earned extra cash from Peak Racing Equipment and the Peak Cup for his efforts during the 2009 season.
Josh Flach picked up a $100 bonus from CRSA for his victory down at the Bridgeport Speedway in a non-points event run against former campaigners of the Jasper Sprint series at that track.
The 2009 Hard Luck Award went to Mark Zemcik. Zemcik suffered numerous small problems during season. His award included a Triple X race cars front axle.
Once all the awards were distributed, series president, Brian Grisel, thanked the 2009 officials and everyone else for attending. Dr. Kwazy Tunes took the reigns from there taking the banquet throughout the rest of the evening.
The Capital Region Sprint Agency would like to thank our 2009 series sponsors: ProFab Engineering, Pancho’s Racing Products, Kelly Race Fuels, Triple X Racecars, Magsarus Ignitions, Peak Racing Equipment, D&D Auto Supply, K&N Air Filters, Bruce’s Speed Shop and Checkers Out Speedway.
