Matrafailo Scores CRSA Opener Win at Fonda

FONDA, N.Y. – Since the middle of last season, John Matrafailo, of Milford, Pa., has been one of the most consistent runners on the Capital Region Sprint Agency tour. Prior to last June Matrafailo was winless with the series and after Saturday night’s win at the Fonda Speedway in the 20-lap feature he now has three series wins to his credit.

“We’ve been real lucky that is all,” said Matrafailo about his hot streak. “We are just starting to get it (305 Sprint Cars) figured out.”

Matrafailo finished second in his heat and started the event from the outside of the fourth row. He made it to the front and took the lead shortly after the midway point of the feature.

“I don’t know if the car was a rocket but it was good,” commented Matrafailo after the event. “I do know it was a lot better than the driver.”

The race got underway with Billy Jaycox Jr. and Jeremy Quick bringing the field to the green flag. At the green Jaycox bolted to the top position.

Jaycox led the opening circuits while Jeff VanSteenburg advanced from his fifth starting position to move into second by lap seven.

The duo battled for the next three laps before calamity struck. On lap 10 the pair entered the first corner together when inadvertent contact sent VanSteenburg crashing hard into the outside wall. He flipped numerous times before landing upside down. He was uninjured in the accident.

The contact sent Jaycox to the pits as well in order to have his right rear tire checked handing the lead to Craig Rochelle.

Rochelle got away at the start working the high-side of the speedway while Matrafailo began closing in.

With five laps remaining Matrafailo made his move in turns one and two. He drove by Rochelle on the bottom as Rochelle worked the outside.

“I was just rocking on the bottom going where I could,” said Matrafailo. “I was sharp because I spent a lot of time up at Checker’s Out Speedway this winter.”

Matrafailo went on to lead the rest of the way for the victory. Rochelle, of Hackettstown, N.J., settled for a second place finish.

2009 series champion, Matt Tanner, of Berlin, N.Y. was third while Mike Stelter drove from the seventh starting position to finish fourth. Jim McCaffery, of Nassau, N.Y., completed the top five.
