VERNON, N.Y. – Jamie Christian, of West Winfield, N.Y., excited his hometown crowd on Sunday night after he picked up his first career Capital Region Sprint Agency 20-lap feature win at the Utica-Rome Speedway.
For Christian it was his first win at the speedway since August 28, 2005 when he won in his Modified.
“Utica-Rome (Speedway) has always been my home track,” stated Christian. “I’m glad to come back and get a win. I planned on getting out of racing when Mike (Walton) called me and told me this car was for sale. I told him the only way I was driving this car is if he came with it. As of right now it’s worked out pretty well for us.”
Christian, in only his third career start in a Sprint Car, took the lead a quarter of the way into the event and cruised to the victory in his Upstate Spray Foam sponsored No. 61.
“This car was a rocket tonight,” said Christian after the win. “I got to thank Mike Walton (crew chief) because he gave me a hell of a ride.”
Billy Jaycox started on the pole of the 24-car starting field and took the initial green flag. He led the first lap before conceding the position to former series champion Jeremy Quick.
Quick went to the top side of the speedway and pulled away from Jaycox. Christian moved by Jaycox for second on lap three and closed on Quick.
With five laps in the record books, Christian dove to the bottom of turns one and two and took the lead from Quick.
Christian was the leader when the only caution of the event was displayed on lap nine when Curtis Bradshaw spun and stopped in turn two.
On the restart, Christian bolted away from the field while Quick was busy dealing with Justin Barger who was challenging him for the runner-up position.
Only five laps remained when Christian encountered slower traffic. He was able to navigate enough that he could work the high and low side of the speedway.
“I was worried about the guys spinning around on the bottom,” said Christian about the traffic. “I just used my head to keep the car fast and keep the car straight so that way if I had to do something I could.”
At the checkered it was Christian taking home his first Sprint Car victory. Barger, of Montrose, N.Y., finished second in his first CRSA feature go. Quick, of Kerhonkson, N.Y., finished in third.
Tyler Rice, of Mohawk, N.Y. advanced three positions to finish in fourth while Bobby Podolak, of Auburn, N.Y., advanced 14 positions to finish in fifth.
