AFTON, N.Y. - The Capital region Sprint Agency returned to the I-88 speedway in Afton , NY on Friday night. There last visit was Oct 27, 2006 when Jeff VanSteenburg picked up the win. On this night it was a former Sportsman driver at the speedway taking the checkered flag.

Jamie Christian, of West Winfield, N.Y., won the 25-lap event to score his second win during his rookie season in a Sprint Car.

The feature event rolled on the track with Christian’s No. 61 starting on the point with Brett Jaycox Jr. to his outside. Christian grabbed the lead at the drop of the green.

The first caution of the race came out on lap two when Chad King got sideways and spun in turn four.

On the restart, Christian again held the lead with Jaycox continuing to look for a way by. As the pair battled they caught the tail of the field. This eventually cost Jaycox a shot at getting by Christian as he got tangled with a lapped car and brought out a caution.

When action resumed it was Christian was still leading while Chuck Alessi moved into the second position. As that duo raced out in front of the field Phil Peworchik Jr., Ryan Smith, and Matt Tanner were right together working each other over for the third position.

The red flag was displayed on lap 19 for Warren Alexson as he got upside down and off the speedway surface in turn one. Alexson flipped through the catch fence and over the banking. His No. 3a was destroyed but he was able to walk away from the incident.

Christian set a torrid pace over the course of the final six laps to become the first repeat winner of the 2010 racing season.

Alessi, of Middletown, N.Y., finished second with hometown driver, Peworchik finishing third, Tanner of East Berlin, N.Y., in fourth while Smith completed the top five positions.
