SUSQUEHANNA, PA (Fri) – It’s been over two years since Jeff VanSteenburg reached Victory Lane in a 305 Sprint Car. The driver from Middletown, N.Y., had a tough start to this season after a crash opening day at the Fonda Speedway which has limited his track time in 2010.

On Friday night at the Penn Can Speedway VanSteenburg captured his fifth career Capital Region Sprint Agency 25-lap A-Main event.

VanSteenburg started on the front with Jamie Christian to his outside. At the green it was VanSteenburg who gained the edge.

Josh Pieniazek and Dan Hennessy tangled on the second lap causing the first caution. On the restart VanSteenburg held of Christian as he searched for a way by.

As VanSteenburg clicked laps off as the leader, Christian was under constant pressure from Art Kiser, John Virgilio and Brett Jaycox. Those four drivers swapped positions numerous times as the laps wound done all the while VanSteenburg showed the way.

On lap 21 the second caution came out as Jeremy Quick and another car came together sending him spinning. This caution bunched the field up one final time.

Four laps remained with VanSteenburg leading everyone one of them for his second ever win at the Penn Can Speedway.

Christian of West Winfield, N.Y., settled for a second place finish while Brett Jaycox of East Durham, N.Y., finished third.

John Virgilio, a former Mini-Sprint campaigner, finished fourth while Art Kiser, of Cooperstown, N.Y., rounded out the top five.

Penn Can Speedway Notes: 26 cars entered into competition for this event…Bob Tichenor, Jeff Fraiser, John Parete, Jason Broedel and Tri-State Racesaver Series regular Jeff Geiges all made their first ever CRSA start…Virgilio was only in his second ever full-size Sprint Car event.

KIRKWOOD, NY (Sat) – Josh Pieniazek, of Altamont, N.Y., has been one of the most consistent runners with the Capital Region over the course of the past two seasons.

On Saturday night at the Five Mile Point Speedway he was finally able to break through to score his first career series victory in the 25-lap feature event.

The race took three attempts to get started causing the initial start of the race to go single file. This benefitted Jamie Christian as he was the pole sitter for event and he led the first few circuits.

The top two were Christian and Pieniazek when the caution slowed the field once again on lap two as Bob Tichenor and John Cunningham spun and stopped in turn three.

Christian and Pieniazek picked up their battle for the lead once the green was shown to the field again. They each searched around the wide track surface looking for the fastest way around the quarter-mile.

By lap 15 Pieniazek was nearly able to wrestle the lead from Christian and then on the next circuit he completed the move as the two drivers exited the fourth turn. Pieniazek found the bottom to his liking and it helped him secure the top spot.

Pieniazek led the rest of the event giving him his first career win in a full-size Sprint Car. Christian was forced to settle for a runner-up finish for the second consecutive race. Brett Jaycox also repeated his finish from Penn Can Speedway with a third place run.

Art Kiser earned his second consecutive top five finish after he crossed the line fourth with former series champion, Jeremy Quick, scoring a fifth place finish.

Five Mile Point Speedway Notes: For the second night in a row 26 cars entered into competition….Quick earned a $500 bonus from Five Mile Point for accumulating the most points in the three events held at the speedway. He beat Pieniazek but a mere two points for the title.
